Roger Daltrey Credits His New Solo Album to Pete Townshend

The Who frontman Roger Daltrey says he would never have recorded his new solo album if guitarist Pete Townshend hadn't convinced him it was worth doing.

Daltrey says he was ready to shelve the new album, As Long as I Have You, until he showed it to his longtime bandmate.

“There was a time there when I didn’t think I’d make it at all,” the singer told Mojo magazine. “But this incredible peace came over me. I’ll never forget it.”

The album was in the works for a few years since Daltrey's last solo effort, 2014's Going Back Home.

Daltrey recalled his bout with viral meningitis in 2015 sapping much of his songwriting swagger. But that's when Townshend put him on the right path, going over Daltrey's material with him and helping to restore Daltrey's confidence.

“Pete was the one who convinced me that it was great,” says the singer.

Townshend ended up playing guitar on seven of the album's 11 tracks. And despite the collaboration, there don't appear to be any plans for new music from The Who.

The Who's last album of new music was 2006's Endless Wire

Daltrey has plenty to do this year. He will release As Long as I Have You this spring, then he's going on tour this summer where he plans to perform The Who's classic album Tommy in its entirety.

The frontman has also said that he's working on a memoir which he hopes to release within a year.

"It's about getting an angle that carries the reader with you," he told Rolling Stone. "You can't do just a series of events. Most of the rock biographies that I've read, I kind of got bored with about halfway to two-thirds of the way through. I hope not to fall into that trap."

Daltrey has been working on the book for the past few years, saying publicly that he's been taking his time to ensure it's worth reading.
