LIST: 12 Things You Have To Do In Wisconsin This Fall

It's hard to beat fall in Wisconsin with all the trees changing colors, that crisp, clean air and all the fun outdoor activities. It's important that we really enjoy this season to the fullest knowing what's right around the corner. Some of my favorite things to do are going to Sunrise Orchards in Gays Mills, WI (they have THE BEST honey crisp apples), carving pumpkins and driving around looking at all the beautiful colors. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel put together a Fall bucket list which is 12 things you have to do in Wisconsin this fall:

  1. Get above the canopy to see the best colors: In northern Wisconsin you can climb the Mountain Lookout Tower off Forest Road 2106 north of Mountain for views of Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and in southern Wisconsin head out to Kettle Moraine State Forest and take in the views from the observation towers at Pike Lake, Parnell and Lapham Peak. There's of course always the Basilica and National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill!
  2. Zip Line through the canopy: What a cool way to see the fall colors! There are lots of Zip Line options depending upon where you live. Check them out here.
  3. Apple picking: As I mentioned above Sunrise Orchards in Gays Mills, WI is my absolute favorite place to get apples. I have family ties to the area so it's definitely a special place for me. I swear they have the best honey crisp apples too. If you're looking for places a little closer though The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago is a great option. Click here for more ideas as well.
  4. Tour cranberry Marshes: Now this is something I've never done but it seems so cool! Wisconsin is the nation's leading producer of cranberries so there's tons of places to enjoy the red berries!
  5. Conquer a corn maze: I'm not a huge fan when it comes to corn mazes with scary ghouls jumping out but during the day it could be a fun activity.
  6. Pick and carve pumpkins: This is something I pretty much do every year. We pick pumpkins, carve them and the cook the seeds. They're so tasty!
  7. See the mass migration of Canada geese: I didn't even know this was a thing! Fall is migration season for birds and apparently many use Wisconsin waterways to make their way south. One of the best places to see this is Horicon Marsh between mid-October and mid-November.
  8. Ride a chair lift to see colors: If the zip lining was a bit too much for you riding a chair life is much more relaxing. At Granite Peak Ski Area rides are offered on weekends through October 20.
  9. Ride a train to see fall colors: So if neither the zip line nor the chair lift is your thing how about seeing the fall colors by train? The East Troy Electric Railroad offers rides between its depot in East Troy, the Elegant Farmer and Indian Head Park in Mukwonago. There are some other options as well which you can find here.
  10. Take a fall drive: This is also something for which I typically try to make time. It's such an enjoyable activity. I love having a nice warm drink on a fall day, packing some snacks and just hitting the road. If you want to stick around the area there's plenty to see but if you're able to venture out to western Wisconsin there are sights that are just breathtaking!
  11. Visit a fall festival: We always talk about summer as festival season but there are still a few more coming up. Check them out here.
  12. Tour a haunted house: This is one I plan to stay very far away from as I'm not a fan. For those who are into scary haunted house and tours, there are plenty in our area and in Wisconsin in general. Just find the one that works best for you.
