U2: Still Branching Out, 30 Years Later
U2 released its mega-breakthrough album 30 years ago today (Thursday) -- March 9th, 1987.
The Joshua Tree is the band's fifth studio album, and, anchored by such songs as "Where the Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "With or Without You" and "Bullet the Blue Sky," it has sold over 10-million copies in the U.S. alone, and 25-million worldwide.
The Joshua Tree not only topped numerous album charts around the world, but it also won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal in 1988. A remastered edition was released in 2007 to commemorate its 20th anniversary, and in 2014 it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry.
