Rock legend Peter Frampton revealed that, after being dropped by his label and down on his luck, fellow rock icon Pete Townshend reached out to him.

According to Frampton, The Who frontman asked him if he'd be interested in taking his place on tour with the iconic rock band, though it never came to be.

"He said, 'I've got this idea,'" the "Baby, I Love Your Way" musician explained in the new documentary Frampton, which premiered at Tribeca Festival on Thursday (June 4). "'I want to not tour anymore, but I still want to write and be in The Who and I'll write the songs and I wonder what you thought if you took my place in The Who on the road?' I said, 'Really? Have you spoken to Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle about this?' He said, 'Eh, no, but I'm gonna talk to them tomorrow.'"

After encouraging Townshend to speak to his bandmates and then call him back, he never did, Frampton admitted.

At the time, Frampton faced a decline in popularity and was struggling financially. However, in 1987, his friend, the late music icon David Bowie, invited him on his "Glass Spider" tour, revitalizing his career.

Since then, the "Show Me the Way" singer-songwriter has made amends with Townshend, reconnecting at a Bruce Springsteen concert.

"I saw Pete," he told PEOPLE on Friday (June 5). "He kissed me on the top of my head. So we're friends now, from then on."
