This girl was chased by a coyote before her dad came by and it retreated. She says it almost bit her in the rib.
A couple of years ago, I'm pretty sure there was one on the walking trail in my neighborhood while walking my dog. I thought it was a German Shepherd at first but in hindsight, I probably should have played it safe and assumed it was a coyote.
Coyotes can be identified by examining the location of the elbows. Generally if they are located well below the sternum, it's a coyote and not a dog. A dog's elbows typically are even with the sternum.
